[edit] Serie A Format
The format is identical to the Serie A 2005 edition. 10 teams will compete, each team playing the other 9 twice in a quadruple round-robin format (two home games, two away games) and a Final Mini-League to decide the Champion.
The Serie A is composed of 3 Stages:
- 1st Stage
- 2nd Stage
- Liguilla Final
Points awarded:
- 3 Points for a win
- 1 Point for a draw
- 0 Points for a loss
The top three teams in each stage will qualify directly to the Liguilla Final and also the Stage Winners qualify to the Copa Sudamericana 2008.
If a team who qualified in the 1st Stage are in the top 3 of the 2nd Stage, the points of both stages are added up in the accumulated table to see who qualifies for the Liguilla Final. For the Liguilla Final, teams earn free points because of their effort, the points are distributed in this way:
- 3 Points - 1st and 2nd Stage Winers
- 2 Points - 1st and 2nd Stage runners-up
- 1 Point - 1st and 2nd Stage 3rd place
The Liguilla Final is a round-robin format between the six qualified teams of the 1st and 2nd Stage. The winner of this round-robin tournament will be the champion of the Serie A. The champion and runner-up will qualify to the Copa Libertadores 2008 Group Stage and the third-place finisher to the Preliminary Round.
