[edit] History

From 1917 to 1929, it was disputed the Campeonato da Cidade de Vitória (Vitória City Championship), a competition contested only by Vitória city clubs. In 1930, this competition was replaced by the current competition, the Campeonato Capixaba, which is disputed by clubs from the Espírito Santo state.

[edit] Format

First Division 2006

The teams are divided in two groups of five teams.

First stage:

  • Standard round-robin, in which all teams from one group play against all teams within the group.
  • Home-and-away playoffs with the teams first placed in each group.

Second stage:

  • Standard round-robin, in which all teams from one group play against all teams of the other group.
  • Home-and-away playoffs with the teams first placed in each group.

Third stage (if necessary):

  • Home-and-away playoff with the winners of the first and second stages.

If a team wins both stages (first and second) it is crowned the champion. If not, the third stage is disputed, and the winner is the champion. The two teams last place overall are relegated to the second division.

As in any other Brazilian soccer championship, the format can change every year.
