Campbell High School is one of sixteen public high schools in the Cobb County School District. The school was officially named after Orme Campbell, a successful businessman in Atlanta, who donated the land on which the original school was built.[citation needed] Orme Campbell Campbell High School opened in 1952 with the merger of Smyrna High School and Fitzhugh Lee high School. It opened with a total of 425 students in grades 8-11. They have 121 teachers.[citation needed]

Campbell High School participates in the International Baccalaureate educational program as a magnet high school for students from throughout Cobb County.[1]

[edit] History

In 1989, Orme Campbell High School and F.T. Wills High School merged to form a new Smyrna High School. Prior to the merger, Campbell students were known as the Green and White "Panthers" and Wills students were known as the Red and Black "Tigers". The students united together in selecting new colors, Royal Blue and Silver, and a new mascot, the "Spartans".

In 1990, the courts overruled the name change of the school (due to stipulations in the original deed restrictions on the property that whatever school was sited there must be named for the Campbell family), and the name Campbell High School was reinstated. Since the ruling pertained only to the school name, it was decided the new colors and the new mascot would be left unchanged. Ironically, beginning in the 97-98 school year, the school was relocated to the site of the original Wills High School but retained the Campbell name in order to maintain a consistent identity.

[edit] Campus

On the left side of campus sits the old Nash gym, which was originally the Nash Middle School building, and on the right, the Wills High facility. Connecting the two is a vast cafeteria. It is possible to walk around the school and see the original brick walls of the old Nash and Wills schools. There is also a building of science labs at the rear of the school. The Fine Arts classes were recently rebuilt, adding a new chorus room, band room, and replacing the orchestra room. There was also a new greenhouse and two-story addition, which houses many courses not previously offered by the school.

[edit] International Baccalaureate Program

The International Baccalaureate Program (IB Diploma Program) at Campbell High School is a comprehensive, pre-university course of study that incorporates international perspectives within a rigorous core curriculum in both the math/science and humanities areas of the curriculum. It has also been ranked among the top programs in the nation.

Ninety-eight percent of Campbell IB students complete required course of study and earn an IB diploma,[citation needed] compared to 79-80 percent worldwide, 76 percent nationwide, and 66 percent in the State of Georgia. The average Campbell IB examination score is 5.30 compared to 4.79 worldwide, and the average IB SAT score is 1326 (V 667 M 659).[citation needed] Graduates of this program are currently pursuing diverse career choices in medicine, law, engineering, environmental policy, international business, economics, politics, theater, film, education, psychology/psychiatry and art.

This program is a County magnet program in its tenth year of operation with a minimum of 25-28 courses required with all PIB & IB courses restricted to magnet students only. The IB Diploma Program at Campbell High School is a four-year program with pre-IB preparatory courses in the 9th and 10th grades leading to the full IB concentration sequence in the 11th and 12th grades.
