Founded in 1981, Cambrex had grown into more than 2,000 employees before selling off it's biologics to Lonza. Cambrex now has 800 employees. It has sites in Charles City, IA, Tallinn, Estonia, Karlskoga, Sweden, and Milan, Italy.

Cambrex produces a wide variety of generic and client specified API's and intermediates. Some of their API's include amphetamines (for ADHD medications), anesthetics, cardiovasculars, and vasodilators. Cambrex also has laboratories to manufacture cytotoxic (highly potent) drugs.
