This page presents some good free software tools that may be handy for both work and play. These tools have not been assessed for use on any of our restricted or higher security networks, so seek appropriate approvals or use on stand alone and home terminals only.

It's worth noting first that some of these require the Microsoft ".net framework", so you'll need to install this (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en). Similarly, some require Java runtimes (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html). Some others listed as "Firefox plug in" install into the Mozilla Firefox web browser, so to use these you will need to use Firefox (don't worry that’s free too).

The list is broken up into categories and the more generalist ones are listed first, with the engineering related ones further down the list.
