About me

Hi, I'm Jen. A bit about me: I'm from Alaska, but now I go to law school at Harvard. I first registered for wikipedia as User:Calliopejen in October 2005, but I think that I had been editing for a while before that anonymously, since my 20th or so edit was an AFD nomination. I've been Calliopejen1 since early 2007, when I lost my password. (Oh well, long story.) As far as credentials go, I went to undergrad at Stanford and majored in biology and American studies, but most of the time I write about things I have no formal background in. I've previously also lived in Australia and Thailand, which may explain why occasionally I'll drop by those articles. I became an admin in July 2007, and I'm learning but I try to do the right thing.

I spend my time on wikipedia because I love to share what I learn and what I know. I also am a committed supporter of the free content movement, since there won't be any legislative solution for excessive IP protection anytime soon. It's also cool to see my articles as #1 google search results and occasionally as the obvious basis for newspaper and other articles (even in major papers!).

In real life, I enjoy playing cards, Perez Hilton, all kinds of dancing (swing, salsa, polka, waltz, dirty dancing at parties, whatever- you name it and I can at least fake it), the outdoors (camping, hiking, fishing), fashion, thrift store shopping, finding the latest and greatest at hipster mp3 blogs, and Arrested Development.

What I edit

There is not free image from which her nipple is seen, so this image is not replaceable at all.
- A Wikipedian needing to think harder about our nonfree media policy

Most visitors to my page probably have noticed me because of my image maintenance work, because that's where I do the most userpage messaging. I consider myself somewhat of a free content hardliner, because that's what this encyclopedia is all about. A replaceable or unimportant nonfree image should not be on an article page, period. Think it's hard to get a picture? Well, who ever thought it would be easy to write a free encyclopedia? And here we are with over two million articles. I'm constantly astounded at the free images users contribute, so I'd rather have some gaps that encourage users to fill them in. I also do a lot of image uploading (see below) so I'm adding things as I delete them...

Other than that, my interests are pretty random. I love Special:Random and Category:Category needed, and I'll adopt intriguing pages I find through there. I've written everything from Grill (jewelry) to Coon song to Gareth Pugh to Shardha Ram Phillauri. A few general areas of interest are Alaska (where I'm from), race in the United States (maybe my American Studies major coming back), and women and Islam (actually through chance to begin with but now I've worked so much there that I'm committed). I also started the fashion wikiproject and am one of the major contributors to wikipedia's fashion content. I like editing fashion articles because they're so undeveloped that you don't have to be a super-expert to add useful content. :)

Image contributions

I don't take pictures to upload, but i do have a fun time finding stuff in the LOC or on flickr. I think it's great to be able to make fantastic free pictures (that no one would have otherwise seen) accessible by putting them here.

My featured pictures and FP candidates are below (along with where they are now and where they were found), and you can see gallery view of all my uploads (probably over 1000 in total) at the commons, at wikipedia as Calliopejen, and at wikipedia as Calliopejen1.
