[edit] Did you know?

The color wheel. That gap is where purple is, because purple is on the color wheel but isn't a spectral color.

I'm bringing back my hall of fame... I can't not share the amazing things I find on this site.

  • Did you know that in American English there are short and long versions of each vowel sound, and we unconsciously use one or the other according to the consonant afterwards? For example, "bat" contains a short æ sound, but "bad" contains a long æ sound. I'm in Thailand and they use short/long vowels to change the meaning of words and I swore we had nothing like this in English... I guess I was wrong.
  • Did you know that purple is a non-spectral color? I always thought it was a profound mystery why you got purple from mixing red and blue, since violet's wavelength is shorter than either red or blue.... But violet and purple are different! Somehow they just look continuous in human perception. Amazing.
  • Did you know that vinkenzetting is a 400 year-old sport in which male chaffinches are made to compete for the most number of bird calls in an hour?
  • Annexationist movements of Canada
  • Zablon Simintov
  • Anti-tank dog
  • Hobo nickel
