Calliope is the oldest of the nine Muses in Greek mythology. She is the muse of epic poetry or eloquence. A calliope is a musical instrument with a keyboard connected by wires to whistles that play different notes. Joshua Stoddard invented the calliope in 1855. The instrument was mostly played on steamboats and in circuses. Calliope is also the name of a Tom Waits song and the name of the main character in Susan Cooper's book Westward.
