[edit] Summary
The California Law Enforcement Agency Uniform Crime Reports[1] from 1960 to 2006 in graphical format, with the following transformations.
1. Crime rates per 100,000 residents were used to normalize for population growth 2. What is shown is the ratio of the crime rate for each year to the 1961 crime rate (i.e. 3.7 murders, 18.5 rapes, 90.5 robberies, 120 aggravated assaults, 894.2 burglaries, 1950.6 larceny thefts, 332.7 vehicle thefts per 100,000 population)
A line represents Section 667 of the California Penal Code (the legislated three strikes law), which went into effect on March 7, 1994. A ballot initiative subsequently passed in November 1994. The overall purpose of this figure is to provide data to help evaluate the claim of http://www.threestrikes.org/TenYearReport04.pdf that the three strikes law caused a massive decrease in crime as described in the Three strikes law article.
