Calyce (mythology)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Greek mythology, Kalyke, Calyce or Calycia is the name of at least two characters.

  • A nymph, daughter of Aeolus and Enarete. Some sources state that she was the mother of Endymion, king of Elis, by her husband Aethlius, king of Elis (Paus. v. 1. ~ 2.) or by Zeus. Other sources make her mother not wife of Aethlius (again by Zeus), and omit her giving birth to Endymion. Yet other sources make her one of the Nysiads, the nymphs who nursed Dionysus.
  • Another Calyce (also called Harpale or Scamandrodice) as the mother of Poseidon's son Cycnus (Ilygin. Fab. 157; Schol. ad Pind. 01. ii. 147; Tzetz. ad Lycoph. 233). She is given as the daughter of Hecaton. Cycnus was born in secret, and left to die on the coast, but went on to become a king.[1]
