Calvin Zola Makongo (born December 31, 1984 in Kinshasa), often known simply as Calvin Zola, is a football (soccer) player from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He currently plays in England for Tranmere Rovers F.C.
Zola began his career at Newcastle United. After a spell with Oldham Athletic, he was released on a free transfer to Tranmere Rovers, scoring 24 goals for Tranmere in his first season.
Some months after arriving at Prenton Park, problems were discovered with his visa and Zola was unable to work (ie play) until a solution was reached. In May 2005 he was granted a full permit and returned in time for training for the 2005/06 season. In 2006/07 Zola signed a two year extension to his contract (which would have expired at the end of the 2006/07 season), keeping him at Tranmere until May 2009. He is set to leave Tranmere (30 May) according to the BBC, for Crewe Alexandra with a six-figure transfer fee, subject to a medical and work permit.
A chant that became popular with certain Tranmere fans during the 2007 - 2008 season was," Theres only one Calvin Zola, one Calvin Zola ,he used to be Sh*te but now he's alrite walking in a Zola wonderland", refering to his lack of composure in front of goal which gradually improved during the season.
He has one son called Cameron.
