Caltex Woolworths is a chain of petrol stores in Australia, owned by Caltex Australia and Woolworths Limited in a 50:50 joint venture. In Victoria, it trades as Caltex Safeway. Caltex Woolworths is notably known for offering a 4-cents-per-litre discount off the pump price, for customers who present a docket obtained after spending a qualifying amount of $30 or more at Woolworths and Safeway supermarkets and Big W department stores.
The 4-cents-per-litre discount is doubled to 8c if a petrol buyer also purchases goods to the value of at least $5 at the petrol station convenience store and pays for both petrol and goods in the one transaction.
On 11 February 2008 the Australian Financial Review reported that Woolworths will replace the paper voucher system during 1H2008 with a card-based product. Customers will upload data by swiping their cards at Woolworths checkouts and receive the discount by swiping their cards at Caltex Woolworths petrol stations. The new system will allow Woolworths to collect data about its customers' spending habits, rapidly introduce (or remove) innovative discount schemes and importantly, increase fuel sales. The system is expected to increase pressure on rival Coles Supermarkets, owned by Wesfarmers, which jointly markets fuel with Shell Australia.
[edit] History
The fuel discount offer began in Dubbo, New South Wales in 1996[1] as Woolworths Plus Petrol. The offer initially involved an escalating scale of discount off the price of petrol depending on the amount spent to qualify – $30.00-$59.99 for 2c per litre, $60.00-$149.99 for 4c per litre, and $150.00 and above for 6c per litre.[2] However, the offer eventually settled on a median 4c per litre discount with purchases of $30.00 and over after the launch of rival Coles' equivalent fuel discount offer though Coles Express service stations in 2003.
After Coles' 2003 fuel offer launch – an alliance with major oil company Shell Australia – Woolworths announced a joint venture with Caltex. Caltex would supply fuel to the outlets and they would be co-branded. All Woolworths Petrol and selected Caltex sites near Woolworths supermarkets were rebranded accordingly.
