[edit] Caloocan City Science High School

Caloocan City Science High School, better known as CCSHS or CalSci, is one of the most prominent high school not only in Caloocan but also in the region. It is located at P. Sevilla St. Corner, 10th avenue, Caloocan City (at the back of the Division Of City Schools-Caloocan). It has limited slots for students (around 250 students per school year). A special screening test is administered to grade six students during December and to those who will pass will take another screening test.

[edit] The CCSHS Students

  • The Caloocan City Science High School students (Calscians) are among the brightest students of Caloocan City. The students receive a monthly allowance of PhP 200 from the city-government.
  • Most of Calscians win over the other schools in competitions in academics and extra-curricular contests.
  • Calcians can be placed in the same rank with other students of Science High Schools in the Philippines.

[edit] History

Considered as the best public secondary high school in Caloocan City Science High School stands few steps behind the Division Office along 10th. Avenue Caloocan City corner P. Sevilla Street in Grace Park.Caloocan City Science High School came into existence through the efforts of Dr. Victoria Q. Fuentes, the Schools Division Superintendent then the benevolence of the City Mayor, the Honorable City Mayor Reynaldo O. Malonzo, who bought envisioned the need for a Science High School that will cater to the poor but talented students of the city.

On June 1, 1998, the dream of the City mayor and the Schools Division Superintendent became a reality when the 360 students of the DOST Special Science Classes from the Caloocan High School were housed on a newly renovated Sangguniang Panglungsod, a 3-storey building at the back of the Division Office. The said building has eight academic rooms, a library, stockroom two computer rooms, a small guidance office, an Audio Visual Room where programs are held, the Office of the Principal and a Faculty room.

On October 23, 1998, the Caloocan City Science High School was inaugurated with the Honorable City Mayor Reynaldo O. Malonzo and Dr. Victoria Q. Fuentes as principal sponsors, the visionaries of CCSHS.

On September of the same year, upon the promotion to Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Mrs. Lourdes Faustino, the newly appointed Principal Mrs. Esmilita P. Ulangca and Ms. Maria Paz Marcelo, the designated Assistant to the Principal, promulgated the guidelines for the admission of freshmen to CCSHS. Thereafter, a selection test was administered to incoming first year students. To qualify for admission, the applicants should pass the examination, which consists of battery of Proficiency test in English, Science and Mathematics and Logical Reasoning for the first round and an interview for the second round. A 60-40% aggregate score of the examinee decides their admission to school.

Through the local school board funding, the school was able to acquire some science equipment, 50 computers with printers, 200 monoblock chairs, 10 teachers chair and tables. Admittedly, the school still lacks facilities for the better learning environment.

Be that as it may, its young status and meager resources did not prevent the Caloocan City Science High School Students to deliver sterling performances in the different division, regional and national competitions. The school ranked first in the Division of Caloocan, sixth in the National Capital Region, and fourteen in the National Level in the 200 National Secondary Aptitude test.

As it progress, it was in July 2000 that the school established its autonomous Student Government with Ms. Mary Jane Toledana as the first president and Mr. Ferdinand A. de Leon in his capacity as the Coordinator of the Student government works hand in hand with the different academic societies and socio-cultural societies. This is in line with the thrust of developing and cultivating a culture of balance in the personality of the students.

The school now has twenty qualified teachers who serve as mentors and inspiring to the almost three hundred students, products of well known teaching institutions of higher learning finishing their respective master's degree.

To date, significant numbers of graduates are now scholars of the Department of Science and Technology. Many of them are enrolled in the different prestigious state universities of the Philippines.

Ten years after CCSHS was established, it was announced by Caloocan City District Two Councilor Rose Mercado that the school is now independent, thus the school is no longer under the arms of its mother school, Caloocan High School. The announcement was made during the 9th Commencement Exercises, March 27, 2008.

It may be short period of the past and there awaits a long road to track ahead but with the concerted efforts of the City Administration, the Division of City Schools and the school administrations and staff, the faculty, the parents and the students the school will continue to fulfill its mission delivering quality of education to the poor but deserving students of Caloocan. Its vision of developing a globally competitive education sensitive to rapid changes will serve as the beacon to guide them as Caloocan City Science High School carries the banner of Caloocan's best.
