The 2006 California lieutenant governor election occurred on November 7, 2006. The primary elections took place on June 6, 2006. Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi, the Democratic nominee, narrowly defeated the Republican nominee, State Senator Tom McClintock, for the office previously held by term-limited incumbent Cruz Bustamante, who lost the Insurance Commissioner race in that same election. Donna Warren was the Green Party nominee, Stewart Alexander was the Peace and Freedom Party nominee, Lynnette Shaw was the Libertarian Party nominee, and Jim King was the American Independent Party nominee.

McClintock faced token opposition in the Republican primary, while Garamendi and State Senator Jackie Speier were the frontrunners in the Democratic primary. Garamendi won with 42.6% of the vote to Speier's 39.7%. State Senator Liz Figueroa took 17.7%. [1]
