California State Controller election, 2006

The 2006 California State Controller election occurred on November 7, 2006. The primary elections took place on June 6, 2006. Board of Equalization Chair John Chiang, the Democratic nominee, defeated the Republican nominee, Assemblyman Tony Strickland, for the office previously held by Steve Westly, who lost the primary in the governor's race. Laura Wells was the Green Party nominee, Elizabeth Cervantes Barron was the Peace and Freedom Party nominee, Donna Tello was the Libertarian Party nominee, and Warren Campbell was the American Independent Party nominee.
Chiang faced State Senator Joe Dunn in the primary, winning 53% to Dunn's 47%. Strickland and State Senator Abel Maldonado were the frontrunners in a five-way primary. Strickland won with 40.7% of the vote to Maldonado's 37%. Jim Stieringer took 12.4%, Bret Davis 5.4%, and David Harris 4.5%. [1]
