Caldwell is located at (37.034077, -97.609022)[3].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,284 people, 574 households, and 328 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,169.3 people per square mile (450.7/km²). There were 668 housing units at an average density of 608.3/sq mi (234.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.50% White, 0.08% African American, 1.32% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 574 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% were non-families. 40.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 20.8% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 28.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $26,991, and the median income for a family was $39,931. Males had a median income of $31,346 versus $19,453 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,340. About 9.3% of families and 15.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.8% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.

- Caldwell was a rough and very wild cattle town during the late 1870s and early 1880s, comparable to Dodge City and Abilene. During that period, there were numerous killings resulting from shootouts between cowboys and lawmen. On December 17th, 1881, Town Marshal Mike Meager was killed during a shootout with five cowboys. On June 22nd, 1882, newly appointed Town Marshal George Brown was killed during a shootout with four men he was attempting to disarm. That same day, around 1am, his assistant Marshal George Flapp had been killed in an ambush on Main Street.
