[edit] Plot
The story and settings are entirely different from the earlier films of the director which were basically family stories set in lower middleclass milieu in Kerala. Here it is a love story set against a big city like Kolkata and the plot unfolds like a thriller.
Ajit Thomas (Dileep) played the role of an acclaimed investigative television reporter and producer in a leading channel 'Calcutta News'. He is the son of a former footballer who grew up in Kolkata. His team at the channel includes News Assistant Smita (Vimala Raman) and anchors Aruna (Manasa) and Sheela (Brinda).
Ajit is a lovable guy who lives in a flat with his mother and sister and is active member of the Malayalee Samajam lead by a comical president (Innocent Vincent) and his wife (Bindu Panickkar).
One day Ajit bumps into a newly married Malayalee couple while on work in a tram, but the guy is hostile when he tries to introduce himself as a Mallu! However, while editing the news, he is shocked to find that an unidentified body found near Kalighat resembles the rude guy he met in the tram. Ajit's investigative nature comes into the fore as he goes about finding the mystery behind the brutal murder of the guy.
The guy was Hari (Indrajith), who had married an orphan Krishnapriya (Meera Jasmine) from Pattambi and brought her to Kolkata, before his brutal murder.
Krishnapriya who is unaware of her husband's job or what he does for the living, is suddenly shattered to know about his death. Days after Ajith meet Krishnapriya, accidentally, and find out that she was a school dropout, who was forced into marriage at a tender age and sent to Calcutta.
Seeing the grief of the lady, Ajith takes the cause as his own and starts to search for Hari with his wide media contacts. However hope floats into her life after Ajit as he provides his helping hand becomes her protector. But in this process he gets attracted to her for her innocence and their mutual love for music and both of them comes to close.
As this is going on, one day Ajit suprises when he comes to know the truth about her murdered husband. He finds that there is something rotten and discovers that Hari was one of the henchman in a sex racket that traps innocent girls and sells them to a one-arm bearded guy (Kathal Krishnamoorthy) who operates from Sonagachi(means golden tree in bengali), the red-light district of West Bengal and is the largest red-light area in eastern India.
Ajit along with his friends try to unravel the sex racket using their television channel, which leads to the bearded guy kidnapping Krishnapriya and taking her to his den in Songachi.
The film is based on the happenings in one year in the life of the television journalist, forms the remaining part of the story.
Blessy who is a big fan of the music legend Salil Chowdhary, who has worked in 28 Malayalam films in the earlier seventies creating 112 hit songs as music director ,has taken his former assistant Deb Jyothi to provide music for the film. Deb has been the music director of films like Raincoat and Choker Baali.
Nice to watch for the music, beautiful locations of old calcutta, good picturization and of course dileep's emotional action and meera jasmine's inncocent behavior.
[edit] Location
Set in the backdrop of urban Kolkata, this gripping story deals with the disturbing social menace of sex rackets. More than a love story, the plot explores the lives of innocent women who feel shunted out by a world that doesn't understand them due to their circumstances.
[edit] Theme
The film is a variation on the village-family themes that the director had been with for long, but instead, our female protagonist brood about in the caliginous emotional aftermath of her husband's death. On the surface, the film is very much in the detailing the plight of innocent country girl who winds up in the big city and becomes the punching bag victim of a fake marriage, undergoes the death of his so called husband and rejection by unfeeling society, and who becomes so besieged by tragedy that she is blind to the genuine love offered to her by a gutsy journalist. The news is not just from Calcutta alone. This absorbing story can happen anywhere in the country or at any part of this world. So universal is the theme. And the narration is bonny to watch - even if it is somewhat cinematic and overly simplistic, in the context of the bolder theme.
