Calculon is a fictional recurring character on the animated television series Futurama.

[edit] Overview

Calculon is an arrogant and pompous acting robot. He mostly acts in melodramatic roles, prefers overwrought and somewhat absurd plots and characters. His most famous role is in the long-running soap opera All My Circuits (a parody of All My Children), in which he plays the lead character (also named, Calculon) and, presumably, his six evil identical septuplets, one of whom is named Sleazy Martinez. Calculon was also the star of the film Dr. Zoidberg and his uncle made in the episode "That's Lobstertainment!", "The Magnificent Three", and starred in the film Coilette, the Calculon Story which was based on his romance with Bender (in female form) in the episode "Bend Her".

In the episode "The Honking", it is revealed that Calculon began his existence in the 21st century as a standard industrial robot called Calculon 1.0. Curiously, he strongly resembles the robot whom Bender names as his 'mommy' on his birthday. He was used in the development of Project Satan, the most evil vehicle ever made, and as a result he received the curse of the were-car. Since then he has been posing as an acting robot, upgrading his appearance every few decades to avoid suspicion. His former identities include Acting Unit Zero 5, Thespomat and David Duchovny. This creates a minor inconsistency, since Duchovny's head can be seen in a jar in "Space Pilot 3000" and "A Head in the Polls".

In the episode "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings", Calculon credits the Robot Devil for his "unholy" acting talent. While this could simply be a coincidence, it could also be a reference to the fact Calculon owes his existence to Project Satan.

[edit] Appearances

The recurring character of Calculon has been featured in many episodes spanning all seasons of Futurama. First appearing in the series when Bender and Fry watch All My Circuits on TV during "I, Roommate".[1], Calculon's earlier appearances on Futurama stay within this in-universe television role. This is evidenced by his appearing only in that capacity in the episodes "Fry and the Slurm Factory", "I Second That Emotion", and "Raging Bender" along with his first appearance. Though he did have one appearance as a judge for the Miss Universe pageant in "Lesser of Two Evils", the first major character development of Calculon outside of his in-universe role wouldn't come until "The Honking" wherein the story of his origin is revealed. Following "The Honking" the character of Calculon appeared in the audience at an ape fight in "Future Stock", and parodies a classic line from Planet of the Apes. Calculon would then be a featured character in "That's Lobstertainment!" in which he stars in Harold Zoid's movie. Calculon next played a major part in both "Bender Should Not Be Allowed on TV" as Bender gets a part in All My Circuits stealing the spotlight from Calculon, and also in "Bend Her" falling in love with Coilette (Bender with a sex change), nearly marrying her and then making a film about it. In the final episode of the fourth season, "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings", The Robot Devil trades Calculon's ears to Leela.

The character of Calculon has also made some nonspeaking appearances. The first of these such appearances was in "I Second That Emotion" when Bender goes to the fridge to get eggs for the cake his face can be seen on a bottle of "Calculon's Own BBQ Grease". Also, in "Mother's Day", a statue of Calculon and Monique (a fembot in All My Circuits) is seen at Mom's robot museum. In the episode "Crimes of the Hot" Calculon can be seen in the robot crowd and in the first direct-to-dvd film to be made of the Futurama series, Bender's Big Score, Calculon is seen sitting in the church at Leela and Lars' wedding. He can also briefly be seen falling out of the Planet Express ship along with dozens of other citizens who were banished to Neptune (since all of Earth was bought by alien scammers).
