Calculating Infinity is the debut album by American mathcore band The Dillinger Escape Plan, released in September 1999 by Relapse Records. Calculating Infinity showcases the band's heavier, more technical sound found in earlier recordings. The album would go on to be considered a landmark of Experimental Metal, Mathcore, as well as being widely considered Dillinger Escape Plan's opus. This would be the only The Dillinger Escape Plan full-length album to feature Dimitri Minakakis on vocals.

Unlike later albums which would venture more into the categories of Experimental Metal, Calculating Infinity is mathcore, without many of the jazz elements and experimental elements of later albums. Also, later albums would have more traditional singing vocals, while Calculating Infinity is exclusively Minakakis's harsh, barking gutteral vocals. Many fellow Mathcore bands such as The Fall of Troy and Converge would go on to cite this album as an influence on their music.

Despite its warm critical reception, it is not the band's most critically successful album. However, fans widely consider the album the band's magnum opus, and critics often cite is as a very influential album of their genre. Producer Steve Evetts is credited to the album's unbalanced, ferocious production style and sound, as well as guitarist Ben Weinman and drummer Chris Pennie.

[edit] Background

After the release of their underground favorite EP, Under the Running Board, Relapse asked the band to go back into the studio and record a full-length that kept much of the sound, styles, and influences of their EP. The band agreed, and in early 1999, the band went to the studio. The band chose metalcore producer Steve Evetts to record their debut, with Weinman and Pennie contributing to the album's recording and production. The album is mostly considered the band's heaviest release to date; with Minakakis's extremely aggressive, gutteral shrills abundant throughout the album. Weinman's guitar riffs are extremely technical and fast, and Pennie's drumming caught the attention of many critics worldwide.

[edit] Critical Reception

Calculating Infinity was generally well-received by critics. Allmusic noted that "the people who will appreciate Dillinger are the eclectics and musicians who understand the complexity of the band and the genius chaotically held within." Sputnikmusic gave the album a 4/5, and noted that "The instruments are a major strong point, the guitarist Ben knows his stuff, though not hard, you really need speed and stamina to play the guitar parts." The Metal Observer credited the fact that "...The Dillinger Escape Plan are careful not to bombard the listener with close to 40 minutes of pure insanity," noting the jazz-influenced interludes and electronic fillers among the album.
