Cala Foods is a supermarket chain operating in and around the San Francisco, California, area. Cala Foods is the sister chain to Bell Markets, but Cala operates stores exclusively within the San Francisco city limits.

[edit] History

Cala Foods was established in 1947 by the seven brothers of the Cala family. In the mid 1990s it became a division of Ralphs Grocery Company, but in August 2006 Ralphs reached an agreement to sell 11 of 13 Cala and Bell stores back to Harley DeLano, previous manager of the chain. While DeLano retains the right to use the Cala and Bell store names, Kroger retains ownership of the names themselves. The above information is what was announced in the 2006 sale to DeLano press release. What actually happened is shown below.

In January 2007, DeLano Retail Partners took control of all but one Cala Foods Store and immediately rebranded the stores to DeLano's IGA. The store at the intersection of California and Hyde St. in San Francisco is the sole remaining Cala Foods Store and continues to be operated by Kroger as of 12/2007.

Cala Foods acquired the QFI supermarket chain in 1973.
