Cal Omas is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe.
In the Dark Nest and Legacy of the Force series of novels, he is the representative of the remaining Alderaanian people during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. An ex-Rebel Alliance pilot, he has great respect for the Jedi, supporting Luke Skywalker in his early bids for the creation of a new Jedi Council, and often opposes Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya's corruption.
[edit] Overview
Omas is introduced during the war with the Yuuzhan Vong. After the Yuuzhan Vong conquer Coruscant, Omas and his loyal ally Triebakk (the representative from Kashyyyk) are presumed dead, but both resurface on Mon Calamari a few weeks later. Omas is elected Chief of State of the New Republic on Mon Calamari, with a little help from Jedi Master Skywalker, Talon Karrde and Lando Calrissian. Omas reforms the Republic into the Galactic Alliance and leads his new government until the Vong's defeat.
Throughout the two series, Omas is portrayed as a shrewd and Machiavellian character who manipulates the Jedi Council to serve what he sees as the greater good. In the Legacy of the Force series, Omas is portrayed as a weak politician unable to stand up to his government's extreme factions.
Omas is finally brought down during the Legacy of the Force series. He secretly meets with Durr Gejjen, leader of the planet Corellia, over a possible cease-fire, under the condition that Jacen Solo and Admiral Cha Niathal be assassinated. Omas wants to keep the Galactic Alliance together, and so agrees with the terms. He is unaware that Jacen is spying on his activities, however. With proof of the meeting, Jacen swiftly arrests him, removes him from office, and puts him in prison. He is later released from prison and put under house arrest. He stays under house arrest until Jacen Solo hints to Ben Skywalker that Cal Omas may have ordered Mara Jade Skywalker's death. Ben infiltrates Cal Omas' house, but reveals that he knows Omas is innocent and that Jacen is setting him up. While Ben offers to find a way to fool Jacen into thinking he killed Omas, Omas ends up killing himself by thrusting his own body into Ben's lightsaber to guarantee his chance to get close to Jacen and hopefully kill him.
