Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve is a zoological park and reserve outside Kuranda, Queensland, Australia. It was formerly known as the Mareeba Wild Animal Park and had closed and liquidated in 2004 under the previous ownership. The park is now operated by Jenny Jattke who purchased the park and spent over AUD $1 million on its rehabilitation. Along with Terri Irwin's Australia Zoo, Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve is noted in the media as being one of only two large zoos in Australia operated by women.
The reserve maintains a large lion pride, primates, and rhinoceros among other animals, and zoo attractions such as a domestic animal petting zoo. The lion pride at Cairns sends lions to other areas of Australia to participate in breeding programs. Cairns is also known to provide animals to other zoos and parks. In 2007, Jattke negotiated with Sea World in Gold Coast, Queensland to populate Sea World's new hippo exhibit.
