Cairns Regional Council is a Local Government Area in Queensland, Australia. The Local Government Area was created on 15 March 2008 as a result of the report of the Local Government Reform Commission released in July 2007. The new Council, located in Far North Queensland contains the entire area of two previous Local Government Areas;
The report recommended that the new local government area should not be divided into wards and elect ten councillors and a mayor. The Cairns Regional Council covers an area of 4,135 square kilometres (1,597 sq mi), contains an estimated resident population in 2006 of 142,723 and has an estimated operating budget of AUD213m[1].
The Regional Council covers the city of Cairns and its surrounding suburbs and the towns of Daintree, Mossman and Port Douglas.
