Cain Rose Up is a short story from Stephen King's Skeleton Crew. It deals with a depressed and homicidal college student, Curt Garrish, who goes on a murderous sniper rampage from his dorm room. It is the end of the school year. Curt talks frequently about how people should either do the best they can with their life or die. The story is reminiscent of the real life mass murderer Charles Whitman, the Texas Tower sniper.
Elements of the plot recall King's earlier Bachman novel Rage, including both the tortured protagonists having a propensity for violence and a classmate named "Pig Pen".
There are currently two Dollar Baby adaptations of this story being developed. One is by indie Director Robert Kreh. The film is scheduled to begin shooting Spring 2009 in Tampa, FL. The other is by Jeven Dovey which is scheduled to start shooting sometime in the fall of 2009 in Los Angeles. The two bought non-exclusive rights to the story.
