Cahir O'Doherty

Cahir O'Doherty (1587 - 1608) was the last Gaelic Lord of Inishowen in north-west Ireland.

The son of Shane Og O'Doherty, he was 14 when his father died and had to spend the next few years gaining control of his lordship. He was knighted by Lord Mountjoy. Caught up in conspiracies caused by the flight of the Earls and angered by land confiscations for the plantation of Ulster, in 1608 he sacked and burned the historic town of Derry and killed the Governor.

O'Doherty was killed near Kilmacrenan following a skirmish with a counter-attacking force under Sir Richard Wingfield.[1] His decapitated head was apparently displayed in Dublin for some time afterwards.
