Cabin John Middle School is a middle school located in Potomac, Maryland.

Cabin John Middle School currently has about 1060 students and 110 staff members. The school, which opened in 1967 as a part of the Montgomery County Public Schools system, closed in 1987 and then reopened again in 1989. Students that attend Cabin John are from the feeder Elementary Schools of Seven Locks, Bells Mill, Stone Mill and Cold Spring. The students that attended Bells Mill and Seven Locks Elementary Schools will go on to attend Winston Churchill High School. Students from Cold Spring and Stone Mill Elementary Schools go on to attend Thomas Wootton High School.

One student is campaigning for the addition of the "Chicken Pizza Club." Administration fears that the worship of Chicken Pizza will soon dominate the world causing the student responsible to become the Supreme Ruler of the Earth. Thats the plan and it begins NOW!


[edit] Accomplishments

Autumn 1998 - MSDE guidance department award - This recognition was the first in the state of Maryland for an entire guidance department. The award was especially important to the members of the guidance department because the state based the award on input from administrators, teachers, parents and students.

Spring 1999 -First prize in an anti-smoking campaign promoted by the State Attorney General's Office in conjunction with Maryland State Board of Education - The teacher and students were presented a ceremonial award along with acknowledgment for the first prize billboard, located on Interstate 95 near Camden Yards.

Spring 1999 - Student service learning recognition - An 8th grader was recognized in a special ceremony at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville for completing over 750 hours of community service.

1998-1999 - First in the state and 38th in the world for Knowledge Master-A team of students competed in Knowledge Master by answering questions in many broad categories.

1998 - FBI's Special Science Fair Award - While many Cabin John students have won science fair awards at the county level, one young man received a special award from the FBI for building a working model of a bed that automatically makes itself by using a pulley system.

1996 - 2007 Superior ratings through annual music assessment festivals - Cabin John has been the only middle school to consistently receive all superior ratings at both the Maryland State Band and Orchestra Festivals throughout this tenure.

Maryland Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year - This teacher was honored by Maryland Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Association.

Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher of the Year in Gifted Education - Three teachers and an administrator have received this award. Meeting the needs of all gifted students is a vital concern at Cabin John.

September 1999- MMSA Exemplary School Award - The Maryland Middle School Association recognized Cabin John for its position as an exemplary school with focus on the staff development program.

Fall 1999 - Mrs. Fall's receives the Maryland State Middle School Art Award

[edit] Modernization

According to a recent gazette article, Cabin John Middle School is set to be modernized in the coming years. The next step is to move into the schematic design phase and to develop a formal budget proposal. These will be formally presented to the board for approval in the spring. Students would be transferred to Tilden Middle School, a holding school, in the summer of 2009 – and then back into the newly completed Cabin John Middle School in the summer of 2011.
