Computer was founded in 1976 as Computer Associates International, Inc., by Queens College graduate Charles B. Wang and Russell Artzt. Specializing in information technology management software, their solutions include CA Project & Portfolio Management. The company has been based in New York throughout its history.

In 2002 the US Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission investigated possible accounting manipulation by CA senior management, said to have booked too much revenue too soon from multiyear software-licensing contracts. The SEC launched similar investigations into many similar companies at the time.

In August 2003 CA announced plans to settle all outstanding litigation related to claims about past accounting issues[1]. The SEC continued to review some of CA's other activities.

CA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Kumar was convicted of offences relating to fraud-related and insider-trading and given a 12 year costodial sentence.[2]
