[edit] History

[edit] Eblana School

On January 1. 1857, the Christian Brothers opened a school at Eblana Avenue in Dun Laoghaire. This was just ten years after the Great Famine and emigration was rife. The school at Eblana prospered to an extent that it became impossible to accommodate both primary and secondary departments in the 19th century buildings.[citation needed]

[edit] Monkstown Park

In 1949 the Brothers purchased the nearby estate of Monkstown Park, which had been most recently occupied by a Protestant school. At that point the school which had hitherto been known as St. Michael's College split into public and private schools, with the private part (the new CBC Monkstown) moving and the public (now CBS Eblana) remaining on the site.[citation needed]

The secondary department, with the exception of the commercial stream, moved to the house at Monkstown in 1950, and extended the neo-classical house built by Charles Haliday in 1843. In 1987 the school was further extended to include new offices, cafeteria, staff room and technology department. The latest addition is the Edmund Rice Oratory, which opened in 1994.[citation needed]

[edit] Management

In the 2004 Sunday Times Schools League Table, CBC was listed among the country's top twenty school, while in the Irish Times tables in 2006, the school was the top all boys school in Ireland (3rd overall).

Though the Christian Brothers retain a presence on the Board of Management, as Trustees, CBC is now staffed entirely by lay teachers. The school has over 500 students in the secondary college and more than 700 students if one includes the Preparatory School.

The school won the League Cup at Junior Level in 1998 and 2004. The school is also the current holder of the Vincent Murray Cup, a competition which the school has reached the final of on everyone of the four occasions they have played in it losing just once.[citation needed]

In 2008 the Senior team reached the semi-finals of the Senior Cup for the first time in 8 years. They also won the Leinster Senior League for the first time in the schools history.

In 2008 Monkstown produced 6 Leinster players on both the under-18's (Richard Ivers) and under-19's (Michael Noone, Steve Boucher, Shane Grannell, Gary Foley and Killian Jenkison) teams - including Leinster's under-19's Captain Michael Noone.[citation needed] Three of the Senior squad were also selected for the Ireland under-19's team, and were in the starting line up against Italy and France, (Michael Noone No.8, Gary Foley No. 13/14 and Shane Grannell sub second row No. 19.)
