Cédula de Identidad means ID Card. In Chile, this ID card is the only valid ID document (a driving licence, is not valid to open a bank account).
The current Cédula de Identidad, is a credit card sized plastic card. On one side it includes a photo of the person, the person's RUN (rol único nacional -an ID code), father's and mother's last name, name, gender, country, birth date, date when de ID card was granted, expiration date of the ID card, and the user's signature. It also has a miniature copy of the user's photo. On the other side, the card shows the user's fingerprint (right thumb), the serial code of the card itself (used to block it in case it is lost or stolen), the fingerprint data for use with AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System), the place where the user was registered the first time (soon after being born, if chilean), and some coded data.
Since this format is just a few years old, there are still ID cards with the old format in use. They are made of plastified cardbox, and store almost the same information, but the picture is black and white, and there is no data for AFIS, nor a serial code to block the card.
The card include several security measures, including the use of ultraviolet coating (under ultraviolet light, it shows if the card has been modified).
