The Câmara Defense, also known as the Gunderam Defense, or Brazilian Defense is a rarely-played chess opening starting with the moves:

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Qe7

It is named after the International Master and two-time Brazilian champion Hélder Câmara.

The main idea the Câmara Defense has is a possible transposition to the King's Indian Defense by playing 3.Bc4 g6 4.Nc3 c6 5.d3 Bg7.

A lover of the King's Indian Defence, he would use this move to possibly transpose to the King's Indian despite the fact White has started the game with 1. e4 [1].

Although 2...Qe7 does answer the threat against Black's e-pawn, it interferes with the development of his dark-square bishop. One of the ideas behind this awkward queen move is to unbalance the game by castling queenside while white will castle kingside.

The Câmara Defense is categorized under the ECO code C40.
