From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh (Latin: Pittsburgensis ritus byzantini) is the Catholic archeparchy (archdiocese) governing all Byzantine Catholic (Ruthenian) eparchys (dioceses) and Byzantine Catholics in the United States. Its headquarters are at 66 Riverview Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The current Metropolitan is the Most Reverend Basil Schott. The Archeparchy's territorial jurisdiction includes Louisiana, eastern Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.
Byzantine Catholics in the United States were given sui iuris status as an ordinariate by Pope Paul VI in 1969. In 1924, the Church's status had been elevated to that of exarchate, known as the '"Apostolic Exarchate of United States of America, Faithful of the Oriental Rite (Ruthenian)'". The Exarchate was then elevated to the status of Archeparchy in 1963.
The seat of the Archeparchy is the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Munhall, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh.
Currently, the Archeparchy has 85 parishes under its canonical jurisdiction.
