Bystrom is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 4,518 at the 2000 census.

Bystrom is located at 37°37′12″N, 120°58′47″W (37.619981, -120.979790)[1] in South Modesto, CA.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.0 km²), of which, 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (4.31%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 4,518 people, 1,308 households, and 1,011 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,062.3 people per square mile (1,571.5/km²). There were 1,401 housing units at an average density of 1,259.7/sq mi (487.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 54.21% White, 2.57% African American, 1.68% Native American, 3.10% Asian, 0.49% Pacific Islander, 33.51% from other races, and 4.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 56.22% of the population.

There were 1,308 households out of which 42.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 15.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% were non-families. 17.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.41 and the average family size was 3.84.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 32.3% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $27,582, and the median income for a family was $28,698. Males had a median income of $27,351 versus $18,393 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $13,108. About 26.8% of families and 30.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 42.0% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature Bystrom is located in the 14th Senate District, represented by Republican Dave Cogdill, and in the 25th Assembly District, represented by Republican Tom Berryhill. Federally, Bystrom is located in California's 18th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +3[3] and is represented by Democrat Dennis Cardoza.
