Byron Shire Council is a Local Government Area (LGA) in New South Wales, Australia in the Northern Rivers region. Its shares boundaries with the Tweed, Lismore and Ballina (LGA’s). It is on the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Highway.

According to the 2006 Census of Population and Housing, the median invididual income was $383 per week (equal to approximately $19,971 per year). The median family income in 2006 was $932 per week (equal to approximately $48,597 per year); and, the median household income in 2006 was $738 per week (equal to approximately $38,481 per year).
There were 11,847 people employed in 2006 (to give an employment to working age population ratio of 0.60), and 1,138 people unemployed. The most common occupations were Professionals (22%); Managers (15%); and, Technicians and Trades Workers (15%). The top 5 industries for employment were Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services (5.5%); School Education (5.2%); Accommodation (4.2%); Hospitals (2.7%); and, Supermarket and Grocery Stores (2.6%).

In the 2006 Census of Population and Housing there were 28,766 usual residents living in Byron Shire Council. Of this count, 14,146 (or 49%) were males and 14,620 (or 51%) were females.
By age, 19% of the population was under 15 years old, 68% were between 15 and 65, and 12% were over 65 years old.
Most people living in Byron Shire Council were born in Australia (75%). The median age for persons living in Byron Shire Council was 41 years.

Byron Shire includes the towns of Byron Bay (7,032 in 2001), Mullumbimby (3,000), Ocean Shores (4,500), Suffolk Park (3,318), Brunswick Heads (1,862), South Golden Beach (1,486), Bangalow (1,230), Billinudgel and Yelgun.

In the 2006 Census of Population and Housing, the median housing loan repayment was $1,200 per month. This equated to marginally under 41% of median household income.
The median rent in 2006 was $250 per week. This equated to just under 34% of median household income.
The average household size was 2.4 persons.
