From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Buxton is a small village in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wollondilly Shire. It's name comes from the town of Buxton, Derbyshire.
[edit] Geography
It is bordered by Couridjah to the north, Thrilmere Lakes National Park to the West, Balmoral to the South and Bargo State Recreation Area to the east. The two main roads and the railway line run north-south and development has extended generally east towards Bargo River gorge. The lots to the west and south of the village are agricultural and residential acreage.
[edit] Education
Buxton Primary School is situated on Hassall Road at the northern extent of the village. High school students can attend Picton High School, Wollondilly Anglican College or travel outside the shire to other schools.
Buxton School of Arts Hall hosts playgroups and preschool for younger children.
[edit] Railway
It developed around a railway station and later crossing loop on the Main Southern Railway. This line had very steep gradients as steep as 1 in 30, and in 1919 the railway was deviated to a less steep line. The new line became the Main Line, and the original line became the Picton Loop line. The loop line was eventually closed due to lack of traffic and lack of maintenance, but the section from Picton to Buxton was retained as a Heritage railway.
The population is 1466 (Census 2001).
