[edit] Multiple meanings

In machine tool usage, buttress thread is triangular, with one face perpendicular to the centerline and the other face slanted at 45 degrees. Its purpose is not to create a seal, but rather to transmit force in one direction only. It is stronger than square thread of the same size (but square thread works in both directions).
