[edit] History

Buttonville P.S. is named after John Button, a landowner of some 300 acres (1.2 km²) in 1808. Major Button was a supporter of law and order, who demonstrated his loyalty by leading the Markham Dragoons in the War of 1812.

His leadership in both the community and the cavalry earned him the honour of having his family name remembered in the name of Buttonville. In September 2007, the French Immersion program relocated from Buttonville Public School to a newly built French Immersion school located on Woodbine north of Elgin Mills south of Major Mackenzie.
