There are two types of buttock augmentation:

  • The lifting of the buttocks.
  • The surgical enlargement of the buttocks through the insertion of a synthetic implant or through the use of substances like silicone.

[edit] Brazilian butt lift or butt injections

The most famous type of shape-modifying injections to the bottom is the "Brazilian butt lift", although the procedure is also called fat injections, fat transfer, or fat grafting. It usually consists of a combination of liposuction around the buttocks and many injections of fat into the buttocks. The fat is harvested by liposuction from ones buttocks, abdomen or elsewhere. The fat is processed and purified before it is reinjected. Depending on the amount of augmentation needed, one may need to undergo a great deal of injections, which are made at various sites and depths in the buttocks.

[edit] Implants

Buttocks implants are "stronger than breast implants" and made of an elastomer so they do not leak. Implants are placed using a small incision atop of the muscles above the sitting area and below the surrounding fascia to secure them. A previous technique of intermuscular augmentation only augmented the upper third of the buttocks whereas implants can address the entire area. The incision scar should be unseen in about a year's time.

[edit] About the Implanting Procedure

Before: A person wishing to get implants will generally consult a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs buttocks implant surgery. During the initial consultation, the surgeon will generally ascertain as to whether or not one is a candidate for buttocks implants or not, usually depending on the amount of graftible fat that one has on one's body. If one has enough graftable fat on one's body, the surgeon might suggest removal of the fat from that area and reimplantation into the buttocks. Once the surgeon determines that one meets the criteria for buttocks implants, one will generally be told about the risks, the benefits, and the lifestyle changes one will need to partake in to make oneself comfortable. In most cases, no matter what the procedure, the surgeon will send one home and have one reflect on the decision and its impact on one's future life. Upon deciding to have the surgery, the surgeon will generally "fit" one for implants by measuring hip size and vertical and horizontal buttocks lengths to determine how large of an implant one's frame can handle. One will generally then meet with an office accountant who will schedule your operation day and assure that all payments have been made in advance.

Day of: Preparation for the day of surgery will begin the day before. One will generally be instructed to stop all foods and liquids by 12am, which is to prevent vomiting, defecation, and drug interaction with the anaesthesia. One will then be brought back into a waiting area where one will be given an anti-anxiety drug, such as lorazepam, to help keep one calm. One will then be brought into the operating room and put under general anaesthesia. During the procedure one will be given an antibiotic to prevent infection. The procedure generally takes between 2-4 hours.

Post Operation: After the operation one will be required to wear a surgical garment which is to help minimise inflammation. One's doctor will most likely have implanted a cathetre into one's lower back, which will be hooked to an On-Q Pain Pump, which will deliver a local anaesthetic over the next four days. One will also have drainage tubes, which will need to be emptied on a regular basis, to allow excess fluids to seep into. One will be given an antibiotic to be taken over a 10-day period to prevent infection of the incisions. One will have been instructed prior to the operation to not partake in any activities which require sitting on your buttocks for long periods of time for a period of about 6 months. This includes lengthy flights, car rides, etc. One's surgeon will continue to monitor one for the next 6 months to check how one is healing.

[edit] Transgender

Surgical buttock augmentation is sometimes performed on transsexual and transgender women who wish to have more feminine buttocks. Genetically women's bodies typically have a more pronounced curve of the hips than transgender women, so the goal is to create a more feminine body shape. This type of surgery is sometimes also referred to as "hip augmentation"[1] or hip enlargement[2]. This surgery may take the place of the usage of hip and buttock padding.
