[edit] History
In 1947 the base of Butler Catholic was set. There was a CPO building where the now present playground is. The Butler Catholic School has what many Catholic Schools in the Pittsburgh Diocease do not have, a convent. Once the Convent was a home to nearly 50 nuns, now is home to one. The school is also to be known of a bomb shelter during the Cuban Missile Crisis, though no one has the right to enter the bomb shelter. Also the Church St. Peter's had the first organized branch of Butler Catholic's work. But now the School of St. Peter's is in ruins. The St. Michael's School Building had been organized and built about three years after the construction of St. Peter's School. Though the St. Michael's still is in existence today, it is no longer used by Butler Catholic due to finicial issues.
[edit] Athletics
Butler Catholic has a known educational program, but also recognized is the athletic program. The Butler Catholic School athletic program consists of just basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Butler Catholic Basketball, also known as the Saints, have made it to three state finals but never winning a state championship. The leader of these three state bids has been Coach Harry Leyland. The 2006-2007 Boy's varsity basketball team was a very big accomplishment in the school. The team had many talented players that lead the team to the finals in Erie, Pennsylvania. Mr. Leyland is known almost to much around the city of Butler. Harry Leyland has built a great basketball program that he still runs at the age of 76. The soccer program has started and dramatically improved since day one. It is ran by Coach Chris Cleary. Mrs. Cleary has soccer experience and hopes to lead her soccer team to a championship after a great season last year. The soccer program has started to spread throughout the school and creates a lot of "buzz." Available only to the Girls is Volleyball. The volleyball program has been maintained by Mr. Slupe. Mr. Slupe coaches volleyball with skill that he has learned through out the years. The girls vollyeyball has not won any titles yet they have had an almost perfect record.
[edit] Extracuricular programs
Butler Catholic also has a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Such like a stock market team, a forensics team, a choir, a robotics team, a newspaper committee, a tech team, and a Student Council board. In the 2005-2006 school year, Senator Orie-PA challenged the then-current stockmarket team to see how much money could be made off a fake stockmarket game that used fake money. The Butler Catholic team defeated the Senator and the team was invited to Harrisburg to meet the Senator.
