Butler is located at 45°15′29″N, 97°42′49″W (45.258174, -97.713673)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 17 people, 6 households, and 6 families residing in the town. The population density was 27.9 people per square mile (10.8/km²). There were 7 housing units at an average density of 11.5/sq mi (4.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 100.00% White.

There were 6 households out of which 50.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 83.3% were married couples living together, and 0.0% were non-families. No households were made up of individuals and none had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 2.83.
