Butchered at Birth is the second album by American death metal band Cannibal Corpse. It was released in 1991 through Metal Blade Records. The album was banned in Germany until June 2006, due to the gory cover art.[citation needed] First pressings of the compact disc were wrapped in white butcher paper stamped with the band logo and album title in red ink. Butchered at Birth's cover also drew a complaint from the Ontario Provincial Police in Canada, which led to a warning to record stores being told not to sell the album to persons under 18.[citation needed]

"Rancid Amputation" was given a lounge music re-arrangement by Andrew Hansen of the Australian comedy team The Chaser.

[edit] Comments about the album

“I was doing a lot of reading on serial killers (which I still am) and true crime stories. Basically we just cranked out a lot of songs, the lyrics sounded right and after I heard the music the guys were writing it pretty much enveloped just as the whole concept of Butchered at Birth. It just came out of the songs, it was kind of a must.”- Chris Barnes [1]

"My favorite song on that one would be maybe Gutted because that’s a really good one to play live. With that album and around that time, we were starting to realize that people liked our band. You never know what’s going to happen. So, when Butchered At Birth came out, we were really started to make some waves and I remember starting to realize that people liked the band and that we were making some waves in the underground."- Alex Webster [2]

"We started writing material for our next release pretty much right after we recorded "Eaten Back To Life". With the exception of a few shows here and there it was months of us trying to be the most brutal band on earth. We just practiced our asses off and composed songs which I felt were full of aggression and completely unrelenting. A raw collection of pure death metal! Of course we needed names for these compositions of death and one came to me while driving to band rehearsal. Butchered At Birth. I thought it was an awesome phrase and definitely a song title that had a ring to it. As it turned out we used it for the title of the cd. So we packed our bags and made our way to sunny Tampa, Florida to record at Morrisound Studios with Scott Burns at the helm once again. We had a killer time recording there and we couldn't wait to be back. We did our thing and Butchered was born. Added with the sick artwork of Vincent Locke, "Butchered At Birth" has become our most notorious release to date. Not for the weak of heart!!"-Paul Mazurkiewicz, 2002 [3]

[edit] Reviews

"This band's obvious goal was to deliver the musical equivalent of B-movie horror flick, and on that level, the album is outrageously successful."- All Music Guide [4]
