The town of Burnley has three railway stations. (A fourth, Rose Grove, serves the Rose Grove district west of Burnley.) Burnley Manchester Road is served by Northern Rail semi-fast services from Blackpool North to Leeds and York via the Caldervale Line. It is unmanned.
Burnley's other stations, Burnley Barracks and Burnley Central, are not directly reachable from Burnley Manchester Road because they are on the East Lancashire Line. The two lines diverge at Gannow Junction west of the town.
[edit] History
On 12 November 1849, the Manchester and Leeds Railway opened a single line branch - doubled in 1860 - from Todmorden to Burnley. The first station in the town, which was at Thorney-bank, was replaced by Burnley Manchester Road in 1866.
[edit] Services
On weekdays, there is an hourly service from Burnley Manchester Road to Blackpool North (westbound) and to Leeds and York (eastbound). On Sundays, there is a two-hourly service in each direction.
