Burlington Island

Burlington Island is a 300-acre island located in the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey in the United States. Burlington Island is officially part of the City of Burlington, New Jersey.
It was formerly known as Matennecunk Island. In 1624, the Dutch established a trading post on the island. Though relations between the Lenni Lenape and the colonists were generally peaceful, Burlington Island witnessed one of the few murders. Two Dutchmen were slaughtered by Tashiowycan and Wyannattamo.[1] The Lenape then promised to kill the braves anyway. It was the first murder in recorded New Jersey history.[citation needed]
Burlington Island was ceded to Burlington in 1682 and is currently an uninhabited scenic landmark in the Delaware River.[1] There is a lake within Burlington Island, the Burlington Island Lake, that is one of the largest lakes-within-an-island-within-a-river.[citation needed]
