Bundesautobahn 643 is a short autobahn linking the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden crossing the Rhine river. However short the Autobahn may be, this Autobahn is a vital link within the Rhein-Main metropolitan region. This route being only one of two ways to cross the Rhein in the region. The importance of this route has increased since the construction (German: Baustelle) has started in the southern half of Mainz on Autobahn 60. One other fact to note is this Autobahn is the only one that connects two neighboring federal states (German: Bündesländer) and State capitals (German: Hauptstadt) at the same time in only one exit as Mainz (Rheinland-Pfalz) and Wiesbaden (Hessen) are state capitals of their respective states.
