The Patriarch's Church in Tarnovo, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. In the 13th and 14th centuries Tarnovo was among the largest and most significant cities in Eastern Europe. The city had three large fortresses along the river Yantra meanders linked with outer walls.

Khan Omurtag ruled Bulgaria from 814 to 831. He remained in the History of Bulgaria as "the Builder" due to the numerous large scale projects completed during his reign including several palaces and the sewerage of Pliska.

The Madara Rider

The Madara Rider is a large early medieval rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau east of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of Madara. It is among the earliest Bulgarian monuments and is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Ohrid was a capital of the Bulgarian Empire after the fall of Preslav in 971. It was a major stronghold of Tsar Samuil and later a seat of the Bulgarian Archbishopric of Ohrid.

The Preslav treasure was found in autumn of 1978 at the vineyard in Castana, 3 km to the north - west of the second Bulgarian capital – Veliki Preslav. The excavations that followed revealed more than 170 golden, silver and bronze objects.

Rila monastery

The Rila Monastery was founded by the hermit St. John of Rila (Ivan Rilski), whose name it bears, during the rule of Tsar Peter I (927-968). The hermit actually lived in a cave not far from the monastery's location, while the complex was built by his students, who came to the mountains to receive their education.

The manuscript is regarded as one of the most important literary treasures of the medieval Bulgarian culture.

Khan Kubrat managed to unite all Bulgar tribes in 632 into Old Great Bulgaria. He was a close ally of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius. After his death Great Bulgaria collapsed under the assaults of the Khazars and his sons divided. His third son Asparukh headed westwards and founded contemporary Bulgaria in 681.
