Buldhana district

Buldhana district has an area of 9,680 km² and is located in Amravati division [1] of Maharashtra, located in central India. It is around 500 km from the state capital, Mumbai.

The world largest hyper-velocity meteorite impact crater in basaltic rock, the Lonar crater, is located in Buldhana district.

The district is the western most district of Vidarbha.

[edit] Origin of name

It is also spelled as Buldana, which is corruption of Bhil-thana, the place of Bhils. [2]

It is believed that Buldhana, along with the rest of the erstwhile Berar province, was part of the legendary kingdom of Vidarbha mentioned in the Mahabharata. Berar also formed part of the Mauryan Empire during the reign of Asoka (272 to 231 BCE). Berar later came under the rule of the Satavahana dynasty (2nd century BCE–2nd century CE), the Vakataka dynasty (3rd to 6th centuries), the Chalukya dynasty (6th to 8th centuries), the Rashtrakuta dynasty (8th to 10th centuries), the Chalukyas again (10th to 12th centuries), and finally the Yadava dynasty of Devagiri (late 12th to early 14th centuries. A period of Muslim rule began when Ala ud din Khilji, Sultan of Delhi, conquered the region in the early 14th century. The region was part of the Bahmani Sultanate, which broke away from the Delhi Sultanate in the mid-14th century. The Bahmani Sultanate broke up into smaller sultanates at the end of the 15th century, and in 1572 Berar became part of the Nizam Shahi sultanate, based at Ahmednagar. The Nizam Shahis ceded Berar to the Mughal Empire in 1595. As Mughal rule started to unravel at the start of the 18th century, Asaf Jah I, Nizam of Hyderabad seized the southern provinces of the empire (including Berar) in 1724, forming an independent state.

In 1853, the district together with the rest of Berar came under the administration of the British East India Company. Berar was divided into East and West Berar with Buldhana district being included in West Berar. In 1903, Berar was leased by the Nizam of Hyderabad to the British Government of India.

The district does not have any big historical fort like Gawilgarh in Amravati district, Narnala and Balapur forts in Akola district. But some historical battles took place in the nearby areas in Buldhana District. The district was one the route with historical places Nagpur, Ellichpur, Balapur on east side and Deogiri - Ahmednagar - Pune on west-south side, Burhanpur, Thalner are in the west-north side and Mahur, Hyderabad on South-east side.

  • 1437 Nasir Khan Faruqi, ruler of Khandesh invaded Berer, a battle was fought at Rohinkhed with Khalif Hasan Basri, governor of Daulatabad, for Aladdin Ahmad Shah II Bahmani. Khan-i-Jahan, governor of Berar was besieged in Narnala Fort that time. But Nasir Khan lost the battle.
  • 1590 The second battle at Rohinkhed between Burhan Nizam Shah and Jamal Kahn Mahdavi of Ahmednagar.
  • 1761 Malkpur pays money to Raghunath Rao Peshwa for exception.
  • 1769 Madhav Rao Peshwa with minister of Nizam encamped at Mehkar to punish Janoji Bhonsle
  • 1729 Gates erected In Malkapur town during rule of Mali Khan.
  • 1790 Dyers flees to Nandura from Pimpalgaon Raja due to depredations of Mahadaji Sindhia and Pendharis.
  • 1803 Raghuji Bhonsle and Daulat Rao Sindhia met British envoy near Malkapur
  • 1841 Mongal Rao plants flags of Maratha Bhonsla on the wall of Jamod.

The world heritage site of Lonar crater is located in Buldhana district.it is the second big crater in world.

The climate is tropical and people mostly uses cotton clothes.

[edit] Buldhana District Boundaries

The district is bounded on the north by Madhya Pradesh state, to the east by Akola and Washim districts, to the south by Parbhani and Jalna districts, and to the west by Jalna and Jalgaon districts. The district boundary latitude are : 19.51° to 21.17° N and longitude are : 75.57° to 76.59° E.

The district boundary has been changed many times earlier. In 1853 the district come to existence as North Berar district with Buldhana as headquarter. Mehkar, Chikhali and Malkapur were part of then West Berar district. In 1864 these three talukas were made independent district as South-West Berar district. It was renamed as Mehkar district in 1865. In 1867 Buldhana district come to existence combining then North Berar and Mehkar district. After amalgamation of Berar with Central Province, Buldhana district becomes district of Central Provience and Berar. In August 1905 Khamgaon and Jalgaon tehsils from then Akola District of CP&Berar were combined in Buldhana district. [4]

In 1950 it becomes part of then Madhya Pradesh with Nagpur as Capital. In 1956 along with other marathi speaking region of Vidarbha it become part of Bombay State and subsequently part of Maharashtra State in 1960.

The subdivision of talukas takes place subsequently with additional taulka as Sangrampur from Jalgaon - Jamod, Shegaon from Khamgaon, Motala from Buldhana, Nandura from Malkapur, Deulgaon Raja from Chikhali, Sindkhed Raja and Lonar from Mehkar to make present form of the Buldhana district.

The district lies in the Tapti River and Godavari River basins. Purna River is tributary of Tapti River while Penganga River and Kadakpurna River are tributaries of Godavari River.

Cotton, jowar and other cereals, oil seeds, soybeans, sunflower and groundnut are the predominant crops grown in the district.

Khamgaon and Malkapur are the major cotton trading towns in the district. The district has many minor and medium size irrigation projects. The important are Nalganga and Vaan. There are thirteen Agriculture Produce Market Committee - Main Market one each in every tehsil and twenty sub-market in the districts[5]

The district has major industrial areas at Khamgoan and Malkapur and has mini industrial areas at Chikhli, Buldhana, Dasarkhed, Deoulgaonraja, Mehkar, Sangrampur and Lonar.

The district contribute one seat at Lok Sabha namely Buldhana (Lok Sabha constituency).Anandrao Adsul of Shiv Sena is currently MP from Buldhana. It has seven seats at Maharashtra State legislature assembly namely Malkapur, Buldhana, Chikhli, Sindhkheraja, Mehkar, Khamgaon and Jalamb.

The district has five revenue subdivisions, namely Buldhana, Mehkar, Khamgaon, Malkapur, Jalgaon-Jamod and headed by a Sub Divisional Officer (SDO).

The district of Buldhana comprise of thirteen talukas namely Buldhana, Chikhli, Deulgaon Raja, Malkapur, Motala, Nandura, Mehkar, Sindkhed Raja, Lonar, Khamgaon, Shegaon, Jalgaon Jamod and Sangrampur.

Each taluka/tehsil is headed by Tahsildar and assisted by Naib-Tahsildhar, Revenue Inspector and Talathis. Some of the revenue circles are Dhad, Raipur, Mhsala., Padali, Buldhana rural, Buldhana city, Mera., Undri, Amdapur, Eklara, Hatni, Kolara, Chikhali rural, Chikhali town, Bibi, Sultanpur, Titavi, Lonar rural, Lonar town, Jalamb, Matargaon, Pahurjira., Manasgaon, Shegaon rural, Shegaon town.

The district superitending agriculture officer comes under Divisional Joint Director of Amravati Division. Ther are three subdivisions at Buldhana, Khamgaon and Mehkar and taluka agriculture officer at each taluka.

There are multiple circles under each taluka and are Dhad, Buldhana. Shelapur, Dhamangaon, Motala, Shelsur, Amdapur, Chikhali, Dharangaon, Malkapur, Janephal, Mehkar, Bibi, Lonar, Sakharkherda, Sindkhed Raja,Mera Khurd, Deulgaon Mahi, Deulgaon Raja, Ganeshpur, Pimpalgaon Raja (Khamgaon), Nandura, Shegaon, Jalgaon Jamod, Warwat Khanderao, Sangrampur. The district has five police subdivisions, namely Buldhana, Mehkar, Deulgaon Raja, Khamgaon, Malkapur.

The district of Buldhana comprise of twenty five Police Stations namely Buldhana, Chikhli, Dhad, Amdapur, Borakhedi, Dhamnagaon Badhe, Mehkar, Lonar, Dongaon, Janephal, Sakharkherda, Deulgaon Raja, Sindkhed Raja, Kingaon, Andhera, Khamgaon City, Khamgaon Rural, Khamgaon Shivaji Nagar, Shegaon, Pimpalgaon Raja, Jalamb, Malkapur City, Malkapur rural, Nandura, Jalgaon Jamod and Tamgaon. One Deputy Regional Transport Officer is located in Buldhana district at district headquarter. They enforce Motor vehicle act and issues vehicle registration numbers in the district with the code MH-28.

There is no electricity Power Generation Station in the district, but has good electricity transmission and distribution network.

There are two 22O KV Substations at Buldhana and Chikhali, with Akola - Chikhali 220 KV line, 132KV Substations at Buldhana, Dusarbid, Khamgaon, Malkapur, Mehkar, Motala and Warwat Bakal. the 132 KV lines runs as Chikhali-Dusarbid, Buldhana Tap, Khamgaon - Malkapur, Khamgaon - Jalamb Rly, Khamgaon Tap, Chikhali - Mehkar, Mekhar - Malegaon(Washim), Warwat Bakal Tap. The 685 km long 400 KV Koradi - Bhusawal transmission line pass through the district at Warwat Bakal. [9]

The distribution comes under Amravati Zone and Buldhana Circle with Buldhana, Khamgaon and Malkapur Division. Each subdivision caters to more nearby talukas and has 33KV distribution substations under them. Khamgaon division cater to Lonar, Mehkar, Shegaon, Sangrampur, Khamgaon tehsil and has substations at Bibi, Dongaon, Hiwarkhed, Hiwara, Khamgaon MIDC, Kolori, Lonar, Matargaon, Mehkar, Pimplegaon Raja, Shegaon, Tunki, Warwat Bakal. Malkapur subdivision caters to Jalgaon Jamod, Malkapur, Motala and Nandura tehsils and has distribution substations at Datala, Fuli, Jalgaon Jamod, Jamod, Kinhola, Motala, Naigaon, Nandura, Pimpalgaon Kale, Sawargaon. Buldhana Subdivision caters to Buldhana, Chikhali, Deulgaon Raja and Sindkhed Raja Tehsils and distribution substaions at Amdapur, Buldhana, Deulgaon Raja, Deulgaon Mahi, Dhad, Dusarbid, Eklara, Mera Bk, Padali, Raipur]], Sakharkherda, Sindkhed Raja. The district comes under Buldhana Irrigation Project Circle along with Akola and Washim District. The circle comes under Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation Nagpur. It has Major Project division as Vaan at Shegaon, Kadakpurna at Deulgaon Raja and Mun Project division at Khamgaon and Minor Irrigation Division at Chikhali and Akola. [11]

The completed irrigation projects are Nalganga Porject in Motala and Vaan major project with one-fourth benefit with Akola District. Medium projects Paldheg on Vishwaganga River in Motala, Madawa in Lonar, Koradi in Mehkar, Dhynaganga, Mas, [Mun]] at Shirla and Torna at Dadham in Khamgaon. The minor projects are at Dhorapgaon at Wadali in Khamgaon, Vyaghra at Urha in Motala, Brahmanwada at Amdapur in Chikhali and at Vidrupa at Dhanora in Sindhkhed raja, , Kardi project at Kardi, Masrul in Buldhana and Sawkhed Bhoi in Deulgaon Raja talukas.

A major Project is going on at Pentakli in Mehkar on Penganga River , Kadakpurna in Mehkar and medium project as Utawali at Deo Sakarsha in Mehkar taluka.

In future a large major project is going to be at Jigaon on Purna River in Nandura taluka. [12]

The district comes under Amravati Public Works Region and Akola Public Works Circle. It has Public Works division at Buldhana with subdivision at Buldhana, Chikhali, Mehkar and Deulgaon Raja and Khamgaon division with subdivisions at Khamgaon, Jalgaon Jamod and Malkapur and Buldhana District Mechanical Subdivision.

There is Road Project Subdivisions at Buldhana and Khamgaon under Road Project Division of Akola

Ther is separate Zilla Parishad Works Division at Buldhana with subdivision at Buldhana, Kahmgaon, Mehkar and Malkapur. [13]

The department manages Govt Rest house at Buldhana(3), Khamgaon, Shegaon, Malkapur, Motala, Jalgaon Jamod, Sangrampur, Chikhali, Amdapur, Lavhala(Mehkar), Mehkar, Dongaon, Deulgaon Raja, Deulgaon Mahi, Sindkhed Raja, Lonar, Nandura. [14]

Motor buses, jeeps , two-wheelers and Railway are the popular mode of transport.

There are many Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation's bus stands at all towns of the districts. The major one are Buldhana, Malkapur, Chikhali, Khamgaon, Shegaon and Nandura. There are State Transport bus depots at Buldhana, Malkapur, Chikhali, Mehkar, Khamgaon, Shegaon and Jalgaon-Jamod.

Electified Double-line Broadgauge railway passes through Malkapur, Nandura and Shegaon Tehsil of the district. It is under Bhusawal - Badnera Section of Bhusawal Division of Central Railway. This main line was under Great Indian Peninsula Railway and Branch line between Jalamb and Khamgaon was under Khamgaon State Railway.

The railway stations in the district, with their codes are Khamkhed(KMKD), Malkapur(MKU), Wadoda(WDD), Biswa Bridge(BIS), Nandura(NN), Kumgaon Burti(KJL), Jalamb Junction(JM), Khamgaon(KMN), Shegaon(SEG), and Shrikshetra Nagzari(NGZ).

Computerised Railway reservation facility is available at Malkapur, Shegaon, while manual reservation facilty is available at Buldhana City Booking Office, Khamgaon, Nandura and Jalamb Junction.

The nearest airport for the district is Aurangabad which is around 150 km from District Head Quarter.

The district has the population of 2,232,480 of which 21.20% were urban (2001 census). [1] The male populations is 1,144,314 and the female population is 1,082,014.

The literacy rate is 76.14 percent.

Fair at Shegaon on Ram Navami in Chaitra Lunar Month of Hindu calendar (or Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami).

The folk arts are Bhajan, Keertan and Gondhal.

Nihali language a language isolate of India, is spoken by some 2,000 people (1991) in the Buldana District of Maharashtra. Speakers are bilingual in Korku language, Hindi or Marathi language.

Youth Hostel Buldhana is one out of two youth hostels in Maharashtra and is located near Zilla Crida Sankulan with 50 bed dormitory and 5 double room.

Lonar Crater has very different flora and fauna in the vicinity. The Dnyanganga Sanctuary is situated in the district. There is good forest area in the sanctuary.
