Bugdom is a third-person, action, platform computer game. The game was both developed and published by Pangea Software.
Bugdom was developed for the Macintosh and was included with the iMac DV 2000 and later iBook models. Bugdom however was later ported to the PC with apparent battles of software publishing rights that kept the game from being properly distributed in computer stores.

[edit] Overview
The game is set in an outdoors bug environment. The player guides Rollie McFly, a pillbug, through 10 levels to save the insect kingdom from falling under the rule of the evil ants. Along the way, the player and Rollie McFly must ingeniously defeat enemy bugs and bosses to advance to the next level.
[edit] Story
Bugdom was once a peaceful place ruled by the Rollie Pollies and the Lady Bugs, but not long ago, Bugdom was overthrown by the clan of the Fire Ants. After some time of recruiting other bugs to help fight off the Fire Ants, they captured all of the Lady Bugs and held them as prisoners. The leader of the Fire Ants, King Thorax, becomes the new king of Bugdom. If he is defeated, Bugdom will return back to the peaceful place it had once used to be.
You are Rollie McFly, the only remaining bug capable of saving the Lady Bugs and restoring peace back to Bugdom. Rollie has been hiding in the Lawn area of Bugdom and will need to travel very far to get to the Ant Hill where his battle with King Thorax must take place. There will be many difficult obstacles to cross, many new and dangerous areas to discover, and plenty of enemy forces to defeat, but once the Fire Ants and King Thorax have been defeated, you will become the new ultimate ruler of Bugdom and peace will finally be restored.
[edit] Levels
- Level 1: Training - Takes place in a lawn. It is the easiest level and contains some gates with keys and only minor enemies such as ants, slugs and a few boxer flies.
- Level 2: The Lawn - The general landscape is similar to Level 1, though much larger, and there is quite a bit of water to navigate. There is a significantly larger amount of enemies. The ants in this level not only throw spears, but some can throw rocks as well.
- Level 3: The Pond - Takes place next to a lake. New enemies appear, including water skippers and mosquitoes. The player can ride a water strider reminiscent of a water taxi.
- Level 4: The Forest - Takes place in an area that appears to be a forest. This level is noticeably harder than the previous level. Feet of humans try to squish the player's avatar en route to ant territory. Bees, caterpillars, and spiders appear for the first time. The player rides on a dragonfly for part of the level, however flying too high will result into being eaten by a bat.
- Level 5: The Hive Attack - This is the first boss level. The environment is similar to the forest level (level 4). The objective is to destroy the beehive located in the middle of the area by shooting at it while riding a dragonfly. Each time the beehive is hit, a swarm of angry bees will emerge from the door and start attacking the player.
- Level 6: The Bee Hive - Takes place in a beehive. This is the first indoor level of the game. Inside the beehive, one will encounter worker bees and tiny larvae. There are also streams of honey that must be crossed by jumping from platform to platform.
- Level 7: The Queen Bee - This is the second boss level and it takes place in a beehive. Defeat the Queen bee.
- Level 8: Night Attack - This level takes place outdoors and is the largest level in the entire game. The objective is to journey to the ant hill at night. This level also features many new enemies such as fire-breathing ants that can fly and toxic gas roaches that leave explosive gaseous trails behind them. There are also swarms of fireflies that must be avoided before they carry you to undesirable places which will hinder your progress. Throughout the level are cherry bombs and firecrackers that can be used to kill enemy bugs.
- Level 9: The Ant Hill - Traverse the ant hill. This is the third indoor level. The enemies in this level include toxic gas roaches, spear-carrying ants, and fire-breathing ants. Unlike previous levels, it is a bad thing to kill spear-carrying ants, because if they die, they will resurrect in the form of a ghost ant and would become immune to physical attacks. However, they can still drown if they fall into water or lava. The lava in this level can only be crossed by using the liana-like vines that are hanging down from the ceiling. Falling into the lava would mean instant death, similar to the honey in Level 6.
- Level 10: The Ant King - The third and final boss level with an environment similar to that of Level 9 but without the lava or swinging roots. The objective is to defeat the king of the fire ants, King Thorax.
[edit] Enemies
- Ants with spears: These ants are the most common enemy in the game. It takes three kicks to kill them. They can also drown if they fall into water or lava. Their main weakness is that that they must retrieve their spears after throwing them. If you kick an Ant far enough away from its spear, it will not be able to retrieve it. Appearance: Levels 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9.
- Bugs: These red bugs are randomly concealed within Power-up Nuts. They can be destroyed with a kick. You will lose life if you come into contact with them. Appearance: On almost every level.
- Slugs: These creatures only follow their own paths on the ground and they will never hunt you down or go after you. Slugs cause damage on contact and are invincible to all attacks. Appearance: Levels 1, 2, 3 and 8.
- Boxer Flies: These are green, flying insects that wear boxing gloves. They fly around in a certain path. If they notice your presence, they will fly over to you and throw a punch at you. They can send you flying over a short distance, but then they would continue following their path. The best way to kill them is to wait for them to come, and then kick them at the very moment before they punch at you. Timing is very important. Appearance: Levels 1 and 2.
- Ants with boulders: These red ants hold no weapons and pick up pieces of rocks to throw at you. Kicking them into water deep enough to swim in or kicking them three times will kill them. Their weakness is that they do not move from the spot they're in. Appearance: Levels 2 and 8.
- Water Skippers: These brown insects swim in water and attack you if you swim into their territory. They move faster than you can swim. They cannot be destroyed, and will only go as far as the channel with the jumping fish. Appearance: Level 3 only.
- Mosquitoes: These yellow flying insects will try to come down over you and suck out your ball time. They will begin to do damage to you once you run out of ball time. To kill them, run around quickly in circles and quickly swerve when she comes down. While she is impaled on the ground, quickly run over to her and kick her. Appearance: Level 3 only.
- Killer Fish: These fish will leap out of the water and attempt to eat you when you go over them. The only way to avoid them is to ride a Water Strider. It is almost impossible to swim into their area and not get eaten. Killer Fish cannot be destroyed. Appearance: Level 3 only.
- Stomping Feet: These feet have a set pattern like the Slugs and Caterpillars and will only step on you if you happen to fall into their path. Stomping Feet cannot be destroyed or harmed in any way. Appearance: Level 4 only.
- Caterpillars: Large green insects that simply follow a path in the ground and will never go after you. They are almost the same as Slugs. If you come into contact with them, you will lose health. Appearance: Levels 4 and 8.
- Spiders: Spiders fall from above and can sting you. They can also shoot webbing that can trap you. Kicking a spider, rolling into it, or shooting a Dragonfly’s acid on it will kill it. Appearance: Levels 4 and 5.
- Bats: The bat only appears when you are on a Dragonfly and fly above the level of the fence. The bat will eat you if you go too high, and cannot be destroyed. Appearance: Levels 4 and 5.
- Flying Bees: These bees come down on you to attempt to push their stingers into you. If they do, they die, and you lose some health. If a bee is on or close to the ground, rolling into it will kill it. Bees can also be shot down with the Dragonfly's acid. Appearance: Levels 4, 5, 6, and 7.
- Bee Larvae: These tiny insects will crawl towards you and will push you around. They can be kicked, or you can jump on them to immediately kill them. Appearance: Level 6, and 7
- Worker Bees: These muscular, humanoid shaped bees will try to shoot their stingers at you, but will die when they fire. You can avoid the stingers by dodging or jumping out of the way. When you are in ball form, the bees will try to pound on your shell and return you to bug form. They cannot be harmed when you are in ball form. Appearance: Levels 6 and 7.
- Queen Bee: This female bee is the second Boss of the game and the last type of bee you'll face. She can fly around and spew honey blobs at you. Caution is advised because these blobs can spawn Bee Larvae. Rolling into the Queen Bee will weaken her. Hit her enough times, and she will die. Appearance: Level 7 only.
- Fire Ants: Introduced in level 8, these ants spew fire from their mouths, and are capable of flight. You can destroy them by rolling into them, or luring them towards a firecracker or cherry bomb. Their fire will set it off, destroying the ants and maybe costing you some health. Appearance: Level 8, 9, and 10.
- Toxic Gas Roaches: These roaches follow you and spew a toxic green gas that can lower your health if you walk into it. If you get enough following you, and you lure them to a Fire Ant or use your Buddy Bug to set the gas on fire, the resulting explosion would destroy all of them. Kicking a roach three times will also kill it. Appearance: Levels 8 and 9.
- Fireflies: These insects will pick you up and carry you elsewhere in the level. It is best to avoid them. You cannot harm a firefly carrying you, but if one is following you, a Buddy Bug can help destroy it. Appearance: Level 8 only.
- Ghost Ants: These creatures are some of the deadliest enemies you will face. When you kill an ant on level 9, a ghost will stand up in its place and use the weapon from its former life to attack you. Ghost ants have their limitations though, as kicking an ant into lava will keep a ghost from rising in the first place, except if it's at the edge of the lava. Ghost ants will also dissipate after a while. When you face a ghost, it may be best to run away and wait for it to dissipate, or lure it into deep water where it will drown.
- King Thorax: This evil ant is the final Boss, wielding a magic staff that shoots deadly fireballs with incredible accuracy. To kill him, you must lure him near a pipe, and break it, spewing water on him and extinguishing his fire. Until his fire comes back, he is rendered mortal, allowing you to kick or roll into him. You will have to repeat this process several times. Once you kill Thorax, you have won the game.
[edit] Friendly bugs
- Water Strider: These yellow insects glide on water using their long, light legs that are spread out to prevent them from sinking. In order to ride a Water Strider, you must first pay him some money that can be found in several Power-up Nuts.[citation needed] After paying, you can ride him as long as you want to, and you can hop off and get back on for free.[citation needed] While on a Water Strider, you cannot be harmed by anyone. When you reach a dock and hop off a Water Strider, he will disappear and you must then proceed by foot. You must do this in order to advance to the next area in Level 3. Appearance: Level 3 only.
- Dragonfly: In the game, Dragonflies are depicted as large, green, winged insects with wide eyes. Unlike the Water Strider, you can hop onto a Dragonfly without paying him anything. Dragonflies enable you to fly around and shoot acid at enemies. If you fly too high (above the fence), you will get eaten by a bat. Riding a dragonfly is a requirement if you want to finish a level. Appearance: Levels 4 and 5.
- Buddy Bugs: Buddy Bugs are small, flying insects that have characteristics very similar to a bee. However, in the game, bees are considered enemies of Rollie McFly, so Buddy Bugs are an exception. Buddy Bugs can be found inside Power-up Nuts scattered across a level. These insects will follow you until you launch them upon an enemy. You cannot target a particular enemy as the Buddy Bugs choose their own targets. Unlike Bugdom 2, you can only have one Buddy Bug at any time. If a Power-up Nut that contains a Buddy Bug is opened by you and you already have a Buddy Bug at that time, the item will change into something else, usually a green clover. Buddy Bugs are an excellent way to kill enemies, as one Buddy Bug can kill a non-boss insect instantly. Upon contact with an enemy, Buddy Bugs will explode in a shower of sparks. Buddy Bugs play an even more important role in the Night Attack level (Level 8) because the spark from a Buddy Bug can ignite a firecracker, cherry bomb, or the gas from a Toxic Gas Roach, creating a massive explosion that would kill all enemies around it. However, they aren't very effective in indoor levels because sometimes a Buddy Bug will go around in a circular motion before actually hitting an enemy. While circling, it can collide with an obstacle, usually a wall, and explode, missing the target. Appearance: On almost all levels.
