Budaka means victorious in the ancient Celtic language. The name Budaka has good mojo and that is why we chose the name or it chose us. Jones, and Craig Hay were brought together by a twist of fate to invent original music.
Spicy rhythms, clever word play, and a sincerity of sound crafted on real instruments unify and diversify the artistic palate of Budaka. Their well balanced arrangements do not spring from one matrix but is invented on pop, jazz, and funk mixed with blues improvisations and wild rock tendencies. The band's ingredients are irresistible! Budaka was formed in July of 2005 and features song writer Craig Earl Hay on guitar. Hay was the major force behind the two successful Houston bands Mothers Garden and the Crabs. His song writing puts forth an honesty that is easily related too and brings his songs close to the heart of Budaka’s fans own personal lives. Hay’s ability to write original guitar rhythms that balance a unique sensibility with a familiarity makes his audience smile and dance. http://www.budaka.com Budaka’s former drummer Merlin Coryell influences include rock greats like Neil Peart, intertwining them with contemporary eclectic legends such as Carter Beauford. Coryell fuses his influences with intricate and complicated sounds of syncopation and thick use of improvised fills and soloing. Merlin has performed and recorded with many local groups and musicians including The Myth, Ardent, Joe Britt and the Jolly Roger Band, The Texas Rattlers, and more. After his time sessioning with Budaka, he has continued work to work and record with several musicians and groups from the area, and sessioned with players from Toronto, L.A., and the Berklee College of Music. Front man singer and song writer Jones sings plays harmonica and dances. Jones has fronted several bands including the well recognized New England band Full-Circle in the 1990’s with the guitarist Pete Witham who now tours with Spookie Daly Pride. Jones who is a master artist who paints in the classical style. "We are first artist and songwriters," states Jones,” Our songs are created from deep emotional experience; we strive to present a style that projects a musical freedom not chained by industry standards. Our Goal is not to be a rock stars for the sake of fame. It is more like a feeling that needs to be expressed or addiction; it is unexplainable if we are not creating music I don’t feel right. Budaka is on musical journey with an open road ahead of us." Budaka's songs are truly a synergistic pop/rock/blues melting pot, drawing on a variety of influences and meshing organically into a voice that seems natural, not contrived. Budaka is not a group of rock hacks yet springs from a wealth of talent that will surely serve as a foundation for one Houston’s most famous bands in the years to come.

1. Budaka does not mean victorious in any living or ancient language. In fact, this appears to be a poorly spelled a misunderstood version of the queen Boudicca. The name was taken for the factual word for victory: bouda.
2. This musical project was apparently disbanded early in 2006, after a short and uneventful jog (Source: www.budaka.com).
