"Bucky Done Gun" is the third single from M.I.A.'s critically acclaimed album Arular. It is written by Maya Arulpragasam and Wesley Pentz and produced by Diplo,[1] with additional production by A. Brucker, P. Byrne and Wizard. The track samples heavily from Deize Tigrona's baile funk song "Injeção."[2][3] Both "Injeção" and "Bucky Done Gun" sample the horns from "Gonna Fly Now" (the theme song from Rocky), composed by Bill Conti.[4][5]
M.I.A. performed the song on May 3, 2005 on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "Bucky Done Gun" was included in the soundtrack of NBA Live 06, but renamed and re-edited as "Bucky Done."
[edit] Music video
Maya Arulpragasam in the music video.
The music video for "Bucky Done Gun" was directed by Anthony Mandler. It features Arulpragasam rapping aggressively against a desolate wasteland (a dystopia which seems to imply the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake), erratically interspersed with scenes of her performing live in an underground nightclub, filmed in an artsy, guerrilla style. The video is also mixed with images of teenagers throwing grenades of smoking colour at buildings; Arulpragasam's live backup singer Ms. Cherry provocatively grinding against a chain-linked fence and giggling children playing in dirty streets and damp landscapes.
