The first settler within the confines of Bucklin County was Sampson Wyett (Wyatt) [1]. Mr. Wyett arrived in 1835 (at that time the location was still Yellow Creek Township). In 1845 James H. Watson and Dr. John F. Powers established Bucklin Township. Bucklin was named after Major Bucklin, Chief Engineer of the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, in a failed bid to get the railroad division point. In 1866 the town of Bucklin was incorporated, and James H. Wyett (son of Sampson Wyett) became the first Lord Mayor of Bucklin.
