Buckhorn High School (New Market, Alabama)

Buckhorn High School is located in New Market in northern Madison County, Alabama. A National Blue Ribbon School, it is known for its baseball, basketball, football, band and softball teams as well as a high grading average. It is located at the site of the American Civil War battle of Buckhorn Tavern.

Buckhorn High School, has a racially and economically diverse population. In the beginning of the 1998–99 school year, Buckhorn High School was performing at or above average on all of Alabama’s accountability standards. Buckhorn High School is also known for its outstanding Performing Arts Program (Drama, Choir, Dance team, and starting next year musical theatre). The administration at Buckhorn High School are outstanding. With 1 head Principal, and 3 assistant principals, Buckhorn High School is thriving in Discipline and Excellence.
Buckhorn is also becoming more diverse. As of the 2005-2006 School Year Buckhorn was
71% White
20% Black
7% American Indian/Alaskan Native
1% Hispanic
1% Asian/Pacific Islander. As the New Market community is growing more students are entering this Nationally Recognized School of Excellence.[citation needed] As of the 2006-2007 School year, there was a total of 1,026 enrolled students; 52% were male and 48% were female; and there were 53 teachers.

- Anton "Bubba" Keller, Madison County Sports Hall of Fame Member, gold medalist in International Special Olympics, bench press, silver medalist and two time bronze medalist[1]
